LOVE AND LOGIC CHAPTER 9
SHARED CONTROL Key Principle Number Two

WHAT IS SHARED CONTROL?
Ø Key principle number 2:
Control is a shared commodity. An adult takes only the amount of control needed and always leaves some for the student. (This definition is from page 109 in Chapter 7)

WHY SHARED CONTROL?
Ø We either give control on our own terms or the kids will take it on theirs (page 139)
Ø The question is, Do I want to control kids or do I want to obtain their cooperation? (page 139)
Ø We need control over our own lives ---- students too. When we don’t get it, we go after control over others. (page 140)

WHAT ARE TECHNIQUES FOR SHARING CONTROL?
Ø Give some control away….Choices are an effective way to share control. (page 141)
Ø Give choices with Limits (pages 142-143)
Ø Set Limits with your language, use Thinking words not Fighting words. (page 144)
Ø Be sure you are giving choices and not making threats or demands. (page 151)
Ø Only offer choices that agree with your value system. (page 152)
Ø Establish a Control Account; share control routinely and then borrow from your account with the students when you need to be in charge.(page 150)

FIGHTING WORDS
What the adult will make the student do.

THINKING WORDS
What the adult will do.
(page 142)

LIMITS (page 142-143)
Choices must be legitimate.
Choices need to be equally acceptable to the persons giving and getting them.
Choices need to be given with equal pizzazz.

ASK A QUESTION OR OFFER A CHOICE WITH LIMITS
PLACE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THINKING ABOUT THE CHOICE AND MAKING THE DECISION ON THE STUDENT

FIGHTING WORDS: You’re going to do that homework now because I will lower your grade if it is late.

THINKING WORDS: Do you want to start on your homework now so that it is completed on time or silently
sit and read a book and take a chance you will not get it finished and have to take a lower grade?

CLASSROOMS WITH SHARED CONTROL……………

are places where the needs of everyone for feeling some level of power and autonomy are met
are places with very few power struggles happening throughout the day
are places where it is all about Teaching and Learning
(page 155)

Choices in the Classroom
Teacher: Have it your way…….do you want to

Whisper or talk quietly?
Pass your papers forward or backward?

Turn in your work on time or later for a lower grade?

Use regular or colored pencils? Answer the question on paper or out loud?

Walk to the office alone or with an escort? Put desks in a circle or row?

Answer the even or math questions?

Find a way to solve your problem without creating a problem for others or use my suggestion?

Have homework Monday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Friday this week?

Put your answers on the front or back of your paper?
Choose your partner for this activity or have me choose?
